“Stars to Shine” Mentorship Programme Kick-off Ceremony

8 famous retired athletes were appointed as Star Mentors

Valuable experience sharing and career advice to newly retired athletes

[Hong Kong, 10 May 2018] “Stars to Shine” Mentorship Programme, organised by Hong Kong Athletes Career & Education Programme (HKACEP) is launched this year with the goal of providing newly retired HK athletes (mentees) with an additional avenue of learning through experience sharing and interaction with seasoned retired famous HK athletes who have successfully developed their second career and gained a wealth of working experience (mentors). The approximately 2-year programme received overwhelming feedback and has recruited 16 mentees.

 

Eight famous retired athletes from different industries have been invited to join the first phrase of the Mentorship Programme as Star Mentors, including, Mr. WONG Kam Po, SBS, MH, Programme Development Executive of SF&OC Sports Legacy Scheme cum Facilitator of the Stars Mentors, Ms. Amy L. C. CHAN, JP, Executive Manager of The Hong Kong Jockey Club cum Headmistress of Apprentice Jockeys' School, Ms. Malina NGAI, JP, Group Chief Operation Officer and Board Member of A.S. Watson Group, Dr. Adam Y. K. LEE, Managing Director of Sunwah Kingsway Financial Services Group Limited of Sunwah Group, Mr. CHENG Ka Ho, MH, JP, Senior Business Development Manager of Hopewell Project Development Limited, Mr. Tony K. T. CHUI, Sports Commentator & Artiste, Ms. Vivian LEE, Founder & Managing Director of ActionHouse International Limited and Mr. Samuel S. Y. YU, Senior Inspector of Hong Kong Police Force.

 

To officially kick start the Programme, a ceremony has been held today at Hysan Place, with the presence of honourable guests including Mr. Timothy T. T. FOK, GBS, JP, President of SF&OC, Mr YEUNG Tak-keung, JP, Commissioner for Sports for Home Affairs Bureau, Ms. Vivien C.C. LAU BBS, JP, Vice-President of SF&OC, Mr. Karl C. KWOK, MH, Vice-President of SF&OC, Mr. Ronnie M.C. WONG, JP, Honorary Secretary General of SF&OC and Chairperson of HKACEP Committee, Mr. Edgar J.T. YANG, PDSM, Honorary Deputy Secretary General of SF&OC, Ms. Cecilia HO, President of Lee Hysan Foundation, Mr. FONG Lik Sun, Alex, Swimming Olympian and Artiste and 7 Star Mentors.

 

Mr. Timothy T. T. FOK, GBS, JP, President of SF&OC, said, “Since the establishment of HKACEP in 2008, we appreciate the support that we have received from the Government and the community. To mark the 10th anniversary of HKACEP, we have launched “Stars to Shine” Mentorship Programme for newly retired athletes. Mentors will share their working experiences and provide feedback and guidance regarding career planning to our mentees as a friend, a motivator, a supporter, an advisor and a role model, in the hopes of helping retired athletes to successfully develop their second career. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all 8 Star Mentors for contributing their valuable time and advice in making this Programme a success.” At the ceremony, Mr. Fok presented the Certificate of Appointment of “Stars to Shine” Mentorship Program to the 7 Star Mentors.

 

Mr. Wong Kam Po, Facilitator of the Stars Mentors remarked, “The concept of “Stars to Shine” Mentorship Program is innovative. The Programme targets to match the retired athletes’ aspiration with suitable career opportunities. I am honored to be one of the mentors and I am thrilled to share my experience and offer advice on understanding the market situation, providing the necessary information that they need and enhance their competitiveness.”

 

One of the mentees and retired cyclist, Mr. KWOK Ho Ting, Marco, shared his difficulties when he retired, “I felt confused and lost at times when I just got retired. Having started my new career for a while, I would still appreciate to get advice from someone who had been through the same situation. Therefore, I applied for the “Stars to Shine” Mentorship Programme and was fortunate to become the mentee of Dr. Lee Yat Keung, Adam. I am looking forward to building a close mentor-mentee relationship with Dr. Lee, and as a friend.”

 

Another mentee, Mr. Skhawat ALI, a retired cricket Hong Kong national team player, said, “My career goal is to be a teacher. I am currently studying an Education related Diploma course. I am grateful to be the mentee of Ms. Amy Chan, I hope I would learn from Ms. Chan and be an outstanding Physical Education teacher in the future.”
